Itās a bit early for this imo (September is still summer), but this LinkedIn post on how to handle the summer scaries has been trending all week. It hit a nerve.Ā
I mourn the end of summer - this is my favourite time of year. I love the warmth, freedom, being outdoors, and a slower pace. The thought of dark days, closing the windows and putting the heating back on fills me with dread (and what about our poor pensioners with no winter fuel payment!? Outrageous. Theyāll have to backtrack on that or no silver votesā¦)Ā
The birds will migrate soon for a warmer climate, and thatās what I feel like doing. I need sun. I havenāt been very well these past few weeks (bad RA flare-up, perimenopause, everything hurts), and I'm worried about how I'm going to be able to work when I feel like this.
My daughter is also anxious about going back to school - this is her A-level year. English and French are āalrightā, but she hates biology. The plan is to ādrop out and marry a rich man - with no prenup.āĀ
Some good tips in the LI post. I like Jackie Colburnās remedy for the summer scaries - āan entire shift in how we perceive change and letting go.ā And her mantra: āDoing less, betterā.Ā
So, maybe just a few things on my to-do list this quarter. Keep the OOO on this week. Plan a getaway for October half-term so we have something to look forward to - there are no bank holidays now till Xmas š
How do you set yourself up for the shift into autumn?Ā
My prep for winter is now woolly hats. (Until 2019 it was booking trips to Ibiza or the Canaries for scuba or windsurfing, but can't get away now.) One of the great things about going camping in Welsh mountains etc with the Scouts aged about 10 was survival training science. A human is roughly equivalent to an (old fashioned, non-eco) 100 watt light bulb in terms of normal heat energy production. If you are using your brain, this is doubled and half your body heat is lost from the head. Hence woolly hat makes major difference to energy balance, and reduces flu risks. Also vitamin D supplement and glucosamine sulphate tablets for joints help a bit.
I have similar problems, re: joints and need for sunshine, plus dysfunctionally narrow eustachian tubes and nasal passages, that immediately block completely when inflamed, turning any respiratory infection into a major problem. The covid pandemic was ironically the only time in my life I've been free from respiratory problems due to wearing masks. It's impossible in this country to find competent surgeons to sort out such things. In fact having adenids and tonsils - barriers to infection - removed made my problems worse, since my mum has both and has never had a significant respiratory infection in her life.
Just got an ad email from Olympus (the airline not the Mount) punting early Oct hols in Greece which we're hoping to do, health permitting. You know, cheapish, love Greece, prob similar available all round the Med. Take an extra couple of extra layers for variable temp and it's still got its bliss. Hope the RA backs off and the painkillers kick inā¦ and daughter sees the light on biology (it's all about us really! how do we work?!))ā¦ or switches subjectā¦ or runs into the rich bloke (isn't Steve Jobs free at the moment? or am I confused and he died and it was one of the others who's wife nailed billions post-divorce and is spending it on "good works"? Anyway sure there'll be a vacancy somewhere). Fraternals, Phil
Haha, thanks Phil, Greece would be lovely. I need a health MOT so will be down the surgery first thing tomorrow to queue - as you do. Probably a combo of virus/RA/peri and it's knocked me out, full body aches and pains so feeling a bit fragile.
I gave her my best life advice the other day (independent income, own property, self-reliant, education..) Hopefully some of it is sinking in ;-) But I don't see this generation putting up with the 9-5, corporate nonsense. Exposure to different ideas, philosophies and ways of living via TikTok etc, not a bad thing. She questions everything and likes a good debate!!
