I just got back from sunny Blackpool – been to the NUJ’s Delegate Meeting (biennial conference). An excellent, thought-provoking three days – more on that next time.
Blackpool is an eye-opener – I’ve not been since I was a kid. It was their half-marathon this morning, so we walked into town alongside the runners. We got back to London at the end of the marathon – utter chaos at Euston and Charing Cross - they had to close the Tube for a bit.
So, it’s been a weekend of running (and lots of sitting). I took my kit but didn’t have time unfortunately - Blackpool seafront is beautiful. Very flat with a sandy beach that goes on for miles by the north pier. Hardly anybody on it.
A couple of things for you for this week – last chance to book early bird tickets for the Publisher Summits & Awards on June 10-11, London. I’ve been asked to judge the Newsletter Awards, which is very exciting – looking forward to it.
June 10 is all about print & newsletters – people, case studies, and best practices. June 11 covers podcasting and apps. There’s an awards ceremony on both days.
Check out the agenda, speakers and shortlist.
I'm really happy to support this event. The Media Voices team are doing a great job profiling the people and products powering publishing – from indie mags to big news brands – via their newsletter and podcast, and it’s affordable for solo creators.
I wanted to go to the Newsletter Awards in New York on May 2, but it would cost an arm and a leg (and my passport’s expired – just renewed it before the price increase). Next time! Good to see dedicated events on both sides of the pond.
Use my code SHIFT20 at checkout to get 20% off tickets (on top of the current discount - ends May 2). You’re welcome :)
Tomorrow – Monday April 28 – is International Workers’ Memorial Day #IWMD. London Freelance Branch will mark the damage done by work to workers – including journalists’ work in war zones worldwide – with a silent vigil at St Brides, the Journalists’ Church, off Fleet Street. 1-2 pm. All welcome. 🙏
A very peaceful spot to sit for a bit and it’s going to be sunny.
Have a good week.
